Gasketed, brazed or shell-and-tube: which heat exchanger?

Start with the fluids and operating requirements, then compare equipment families.

Define the process

Record both fluids, temperatures, flow rates and pressure requirements. Missing data on either circuit prevents a reliable comparison.

Compare the construction

Assess gasketed, brazed and welded designs alongside cleaning access, materials and available service space. Purchase price alone does not describe the operating requirement.

Prepare a shortlist

The outcome is a specification for engineering review, rather than a final selection. NL addresses viscous fluids; NW and Free Flow address particles or fibres; LWC uses semi-welded channels for critical media. ND and DW are double-wall solutions, not interchangeable family names.

Prepare for the discussion

  • Fluids, composition and relevant material requirements
  • Flow rates and inlet/outlet temperatures on both circuits
  • Design conditions and allowable pressure drop on each side
  • Exact model, nameplate and current technical documents
